Pretty Lights- Spilling Over Every Side

The newest EP from Pretty Lights for 2010, Spilling Over Every Side, is now available for download at their website. Haven't had a chance to get a good listen yet, but this one has 6 fresh tracks, each at least 5 minutes long. What Derek Smith had to say about it:

"I really tried to push my style with this EP and explore several different genres, sometimes within the same song.  The songs are long and there are a lot of parts... I guess, because thats what I want to hear... fresh, intricate, beats that attempt to communicate ideas or tell a story somehow."

Bell and Ross Vintage Collection

The Bell and Ross Vintage collection is based on the utilitarian watches used by pilots during the inception (sick movie) of aviation when instrument panels were only written about in sci-fi books. I particularly think the over-sized numbers are a good touch. Obviously they've given the watch band to a puppy to gnaw on, but hey, the economy is tough right now.

SHARKZ

So, I was sea kayaking far off the coast of Malibu a few weekends ago and went by a boat and graciously waved hello. The captain of the vessel then looked at me (soaking wet from just dipping in the water) and said "I hope you don't plan on swimming anymore, they have Great White cages out here." I thought he was trying to scare me, so when I got home I decided to look it up. Turns out two UCLA students were eaten right out of their sea kayak a few years back. Perfect. Regardless, these pictures are pretty sick.

Additional sea life photos can be found on Wayne Levin's website.

The Hood Internet- Trillwave

The Hood Internet are some heavy hitters in the mash-up scene. Their newest mash tape goodness comes in the form of Trillwave, which joins together hip-hop, electronic, and indie sounds to create an endless summer jam. Girl Talk is overrated.

Brothertiger- Feel

John Jagos is an Ohio University student who, under the name Brothertiger, experiments with his own blend of downtempo chill/dance. His single "Feel" might as well be a bonus track on a Delorean album with his spacey synths, reverberated guitar riffs, and echoing vocals.

Freelance Whales- Generator ^ Second Floor

Freelance Whales' debut LP Weathervanes is available now. "Generator ^ Second Floor" demonstrates their folky foot tapping tendencies. Their lead singer is reminiscent of other soft spoken singer/songwriters such as Sufjan Stevens only charged with a little more energy, similar to (the late band) The Format's lead singer Nate Ruess.

This (very complete) list is courtesy of Instash and needs very little introduction. All I will say is yes, I agree on the vast majority of them.

The Social Network Trailer

In 2003, Harvard University student Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook. "The Social Network" is the story of how it came in to existence.

Today the first full length trailer has been released and it looks amazing. Definitely on my list of movies to see.

The music for this trailer is just as impressive, an excellent cover of Radiohead's "Creep" by the Belgium girls choir, Scala which I can't stop listening to.

Jesse Eisenberg plays Mark Zuckerberg (and I'm guessing they're both Jewish) with Justin Timberlake in a lead role as a friend of Mark's.

How to Booze

Written by two NYC bartenders who have seen their fair share of uninformed drunks. This book , available conveniently at Amazon.com for the low price of $10, is for those of you who claim to know "how to booze" , but lack the knowledge and sophistication of a refined gentleman who knows what to order and when. Not only that, but the book also offers life lessons learned from years behind the bar.

Restrepo Documentary

Restrepo follows a U.S. Army platoon for an entire year in the Korengal Valley, known as one of the most dangerous places in the world.  I am very curious as to what modern war in Afghanistan is really like so I really want to see this.

Gitman Vintage Sport Shirts

These button downs are so fresh..from their website:

"Gitman Vintage is an American heritage sport-shirt and neckwear line that pays tribute to its past, but with a distinct difference. While continuing to honor the importance of a finely crafted button-down oxford and the indispensable pinpoint, the design team at Gitman dusted off old line books to curate an authentic interpretation of the past by selectively appropriating their favorite fabrics and having them remade"

Graffiti 6- Stare Into the Sun

If you've ever seen a Bud Light Lime commercial you know what I'm talking about. Its that bright, soulful, catchy, poppy sort of track dubbed over a glinty sun drenched backyard party with girls in tank tops and daisy dukes. In the background a golden retriever plays catch with an attractive male and two busty babes frollick around in bikinis. My prediction: the next track for one of these will be a Graffiti6 track.
